ACADEMIC

There is an urgent need for research directed to illuminate the natural processes of ecosystems and individual species, their relationships, rates of growth, inventories; as well as the effect that human intervention imposes on them. The research and understanding of these micro and macro processes in the Amazon is still in its infancy. This body of research is essential to guide the design of intelligent strategies that deal with the challenges that the pressures of human population growth and expanding markets are imposing on the Amazon.

This page is a resource tool for researchers and students interested in taking part in this important work. Here we point out a few of the players that are active in this work. If you know of others involved in this work, and who merit mention, please let us know at sternsaat2001@yahoo.com.

The National University of Colombia was founded in 1867, and has a presence in five cities around Colombia. At its Amazonia Campus (UNAL-Amazonia), it offers two postgraduate programs: A Master’s and a Specialization Degree Program in Amazonian Studies.

These are multidisciplinary programs that serve as a basic contextualization to candidates with a professional interest in the Amazon region. These programs count with the support of a consortium of Dutch Universities, and generate important research work that may - in due time - serve to guide international and national investment strategies, government policies, and the construction of autonomy, equity, and viable development alternatives for the region.

The Lines of Investigation at UNAL-Amazonia are:

• History and Cultures of the Amazon
• Ecosystems, Biodiversity, and Conservation
• Regional Development in the Amazon

For more information on their research facilities, programs, and events, please visit the site of UNAL- AMAZONIA.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Amazonian Institute of Research (IMANI)
In 1989 The National University of Colombia establishes a Scientific Station in Leticia. By 1995 it constitutes itself as the Amazonian Institute of Research (IMANI). This Research Institute is where the Master and the Specialization Degree Programs on Amazonian Studies starts to be outlined, to open in 2001.

SINCHI Instituto Amazonico de Investigación Científico                                                                          The Amazonian Institute for Scientific Investigations –Sinchi– has advanced a planning strategy process, from which its mission activities respond to: Key success factors and its strategic, from where identified lines [of research] are identified as strategies for the Amazon region.

TROPENBOS INTERNATIONAL (TBI)                                                                                                    It is our objective to contribute to a better use and governance of tropical forests for the benefit of people, conservation and sustainable development. We aim to achieve this objective through research (knowledge), capacity building (capacity and organizations) and communication (dialogue and linkage between national and international debates). During 2006, different activities were developed in our country programmes that contribute to the achievement of our objective.

CORPOAMAZONIA
The Corporation for the Sustainable Development of the Southern Colombian Amazon is not entirely a Research Center. It’s a government agency in charge of watching over the management of resources and its impact on the natural resources.
