Working
raw materials by hand has been a millenary activity of the millenary cultures
of the Amazon. The weaving of baskets, making of traps, fishing, and hunting
instruments; as well as the manufacturing of clay pots, ceremonial garments
and ornaments, and the handcrafting of implements to prepare the many by-products
of the yucca (the basic staple in the Amazon)- all these, and many other
examples of ingenuity, of inherited and bequeathed knowledge, have opened
the way to new methods and styles of working the ancestral raw materials
into what we could call the Amazon Art for the XXI Century.
Here, we showcase
some artists and their work. We look forward to providing a website that
is representative of the work of modern-day Amazon artists and artisans.
So check back on this link in a near future.
When you visit
to Leticia, you may buy Amazon art and crafts from many stores in town;
you may go directly to the indigenous communities, where artisans abound,
and buy directly from them; or you may even have a piece made to order in
the size and design you dream.
If you are
an artist or artisan yourself, you can share and exchange knowledge in various
indigenous communities, such as Macedonia or San Martin de Amacayacu, where
artisans are happy to share their techniques with visitors.
